Thirty years ago, tax advice for businesses in Sri Lanka was typically provided by bookkeepers or accountants. However, with the emergence of different business models, the increasing complexity of business transactions, and the introduction of various types of taxes by the government of Sri Lanka, the need for specialized tax planning and advisory services became crucial. Accountants alone were no longer able to handle the intricate demands of tax planning and advisory services. As a result, the services of professional tax consultants emerged, and DPR became a pioneer in Sri Lanka, commencing its tax profession and practice in 1999.
Founded by Bharatha Subasinghe in 1999, DPR began with a vision to turn an idea into a functioning and thriving organization in Sri Lanka. Innovation and creativity have been the foundation of DPR since its inception.
Taxation is a complex subject that few people fully understand. DPR recognized that this lack of knowledge presented an opportunity to find solutions for the tax challenges faced by companies and individuals in Sri Lanka.
In 2005, DPR introduced the first tax website in Sri Lanka, featuring an online individual income tax calculation and e-return filing system. This system allowed users to compute and file their annual income tax returns without needing to understand tax laws. Consequently, DPR became the pioneer company in Sri Lanka to introduce such an innovative tax system. With the introduction of online tax filing and payment concepts by DPR, the Inland Revenue Act was amended to allow taxpayers to file tax returns electronically
Many consultants believed that tax knowledge should not be shared with clients. However, DPR strongly believes that client education on taxation is a crucial aspect of tax consultation. To this end, DPR launched an SMS gateway system in 2006 to share all tax updates with the public. They also contributed articles to national newspapers in Sri Lanka and began conducting seminars and workshops on taxation to educate taxpayers.
With over 25 years of practice, DPR has continuously innovated with creativity, establishing a unique position in the tax advisory service sector in Sri Lanka.
